Well to start out with, shortboards are short surfboards. they are made for performance and are not recommended for beginners. intermediate to pro riders use shortboards longboards are long surfboards. they are tall and very boyant. you can nose ride on longboards. longboards can be used from beginners to pros. they are boyant so they are prefered by older people so you dont have to paddle so hard. funboards are medium size surfboards. they are for people who want a board that will last a while and want some manuverability and dont want to ride a very long board. they are used for beginners to pro riders also. soft boards are surfboards with a soft foamy top. they are used for beginners to teach the basics of surfing. they can catch a wave on the whitewash. you cant manuever very well on these boards because they are stable and made for beginners

Http:/ / 360guide.info/ surfing/ surfboard-types.html?Itemid= 51 This website gives one of the better descriptions I have seen on-line. Check some of the old Q & A's on Yahoo Anwers for some other neat info on surfing. surfing-waves.com/ beginner_surfboard.htm This website is okay, but is oriented pretty much to "beginner' boards. en.wikipedia.org/ wiki/ Surfboard The Wikipedia info is pretty complete. I have been surfing since 1966, so I takle a lot of this information for granted. If you are really interested in learning to surf. go to a good local surf shop. The folks there will help set you up with lessons, and everything else you need.

Long boards for surfing 365 days a year. You can catch any wave because they float you so well; you barely need to paddle. Short boards are for days when the waves are strong. Otherwise you have to paddle like crazy to catch a wave since you are floating low in the water. Fun boards and soft boards are for places where the waves break right on the beach. You are trying to surf "sideways " to get as far and as fast as you can before the wave crashes into the shore sand. At the last second you roll under the wave and live to surf again. This is very similar to body surfing which is the one thing you forgot to mention. You only need a pair of flippers..
