All About Surfing Shorts

Question: Do people wear something under surfing shorts?

I'm an old school. I'm used to swim shorts with inner lining. But, I see almost all surf shorts don't have any inner lining. Do people wear something under surf shorts? Or, they pretty much wear nothing under the shorts? I want to know!!!

I take an aerobics class with a guy who wears board shorts all the time. I can definitely say that he does not wear under pants or a lining. I found that out during the floor exercises. ewww

Nothing, they are made to be worn that way, but some wear underwear under them. Without a lining it keeps sand from getting caught up in them causing chaffing. They are called "Board Shorts " by the way.

Me and most of the guys i know wear boxers or boxer briefs underneath. I hate the inner lining shorts. Its up to you and what you feel comfortable in and all, but i think these days since so many guys wear board shorts (swimming trunks) as regular shorts we're just used to wearing underwear underneath. But like i said its up to you.

It all depends on the dude. if you you want support for your boys or you want your boys to dangle, but if you lose your shorts in the water with out underwear on your royally screwed.

I don't wear anything with them. I have some shorts that I probably should 'cause they chafe when walking when they are wet. Some of the surf clothing companies make lycra shorts to wear under them. I haven't tried them but it would probably be a good idea during sea lice season so they can't bite my more sensitive parts. Since I had somebody email me and ask: Sea lice, at least in the mid-Atlantic, are crab larva. They bite you causing a stinging sensation, sort of like a jelly fish sting, only they like to get up in your board shorts. They show up for a few weeks in the late summer.

If you do wear anything you will most likely come home with chaffing from the sand getting caught in your shorts, the same goes for wetsuits, I wear nothing to reduce the chances of chaffing.

Board shorts are meant to be worn without underwear while in the water. Sand gets caught in those goofy lining in shorts. That causes chafing. However, some board shorts have stitching that can cause chafing even without lining. It causes your privates to get chafed. You can wear lycra "bike shorts " of stuff from Under Armor to prevent that. There are newer, more expensive board shorts that are stitch-less that prevent that kind of stuff. So no underwear please! It's bad once the salt dries in the whitie tighties/ boxers. Once it dries, the undies stiffen up making things extremely uncomfy. Again, only bikini bottoms under the shorts should be worn for women. There's no reason to wear boxers or briefs under board shorts. You may want to wear some sort of lycra shorts underneath when on dry land if you choose to wear board shorts to the gym though. No one needs to see your junk. It's too easy to get kicked out for indecent exposure.

I don't wear anything underneath them because of the chafing. It's horrible. So I'm telling now and here, don't wear anything underneath your surf shorts or actually, we call them board shorts if you'd like to know. The sand gets in, that's what I mean by the chafing and you can't survive it. So whatever you do DON'T wear underwear or anything else underneath. And when you said almost all board shorts don't have inner lining, I need to correct you, even though some don't mine does. So the sand doesn't get through. Just go to a good shop, okay? You'll get the best shorts at the best shops. I guess my work's done here, but remember, don't wear underwear underneath them, the chafing is horrible, don't risk it.
